Blog Content Ripping and Proxy Attacks

Posts Posted by Steve under General on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 12:00 am

Today, I have been busy trying to resolve an issue that has been ongoing with the blog.  This is why I have not posted anything all day.  I discovered this problem when I was reporting the DomainFest Auction Results Live.  There was a large amount of traffic to the blog and I started to get errors with the blog loading.

It appears for the past week or so, my blog has been targeted in a malicious attack.  I am sure alot of you have tried to visit the blog at some point, only to find the site not resolving with an error page.  What is happening is an attack is being launched every 3-6 hours for 1-2 minutes denying access to the blog.  They are scanning every single page 3-5 seconds apart keeping the word press database from running properly.  What I have been told is it is individuals ripping content from blogs they wish to monetize.

I am still trying to find a resolution, so please bare with me until this issue is resolved.  Just keep trying every few minutes if you are not able to get the site to resolve.  If there are any tech gurus, please send me an email.  If you own a blog, scan your logs to see if it is being done to you as well.  It happens without you knowing until you have a large surge of traffic and service is denied.  This really sucks!

    Hey Steve,
    I have some experience.

First - we need to identify who is doing this. The answer is in your access logs - you need the IP address, we can block them using htaccess.

If you can’t figure out the IP address, email me your raw access logs for a timeframe that covers an attack.

    Also, I recommend
    this as a defense.

    Rich,

Thank you for the information you ahve provided. I have followed the link trails and found a wordpress plugin designed specifically for this as well as the site with alot of information on this activity. Once I confirm it works, I will publish an article for others with all the details.

Thank you so much for your help! Crossing my fingers that this works.
