Ron Jackson from DNJournal.com has just released this month’s cover story, Skip Hoagland. The interview is an outstanding read and full of great information. If you truly want to understand how to manage your time and build your empire efficiently, then this is a must read.

Skip covers his secret strategies to his success. Along the way, he mentions key people who have assisted him in this journey. It not very often you find a successful person who is willing to put the spot light on others, rather than themselves. Skip is an all around sound businessman and a great friend that few have had the pleasure of calling a friend.

Ron has done a great job with this story and I hope that all of you enjoy reading the article and are able to apply a few strategies to building your domaining empires.

On a different note, I have been out of the loop for the past week. I have an enormous family emergency going on and it will last for the next couple of months. Please understand that I will not be posting as often as I would like. My priorities are to take care of the home front, then move forward. Look forward to seeing everyone at the Geo Expo this week. It is going to be a welcomed break for me, with the current stress level.

Thank you for your continued support.

Great article with some long overdue recognition for Skip.
And a nice pic of you Steve with your daughter!

  2. LDM Says:

I’m sure I speak for alot of your readers, when I say I hope everything turns out ok. Thanks for sharing your story.

  3. Michael Castello Says:

Once again Ron Jackson writes another great story for what I hope someday will be a book on the pioneers of the domain industry. Skip deserves the recognition and has done a great deal to enhance geo domain development.

  4. M. Menius Says:

Superb story. Excellent reading. Skip’s philosophy of significantly compensating managers and sales staff makes much sense. If partners are rewarded for their contribution, and have a vested stake in the outcome of the domain/business, then the motivation and drive to succeed are built-in.

I think his advice on having a comprehensive, detailed contract is extremely beneficial as well. I’ve been hard at work for months on a single domain and can appreciate the comments made about the complexity and challenge of full site development. There are so many decisions, all inter-related, that must be made as you move forward. Building something of quality, and perhaps unique (not cookie cutter), takes time.

As always, Ron Jackson deserves credit. No one does a better job of finding inspirational and relevant stories.

Wishing you the best, Steve, with your family situation!

Besides being a total professional, Skip responded to an email of mine is a super-help way —he’s a gentleman in all aspects!

    Thanks, Skip!

  8. tom Says:

Yes, great story and filled with lots of useful nuggets and insights.

Have a quick question re geodomain and disclaimer, which I alreay posted on Simplygeo.net under ‘Ask A Geo Pro’, but thought I would ask here as well.

The story reported that the city of Myrtle Beach and the city’s Chamber of Commerce sued Skip in an effort to take the domain MyrtleBeach.com from him. I would like to get some feedback from our in-house experts whether owners/operators of geodomains (developed and/or parked) need to place some sort of disclaimer on their geodomain sites saying that their sites are not affiliated/connected with the city/city government/chamber of commerce/state etc?

  9. M. Menius Says:

Tom - A majority of case precedent (and more recently all cases to my knowledge) have found that individual domain owners/registrants have as much right to a geodomain as do so-called official city governments … some of whom envision themselves as magically entitled to local geodomains.

My position is that geodomainers are protected under several viable defenses, and well within rights of registration. Trademark law (which has applicability) prohibits exclusive claims to wordmarks based solely on a geographical specifier/location. That being said, some consider it beneficial to put a disclaimer on their geo site to help inform the consumer that the site is an independent entity separate from the city.

  10. Steve M Says:

    Great story and information, Skip.

Thanks for being willing to share so much about your great success/es.

If this doesn’t encourage all those city/ community/ region/ state/ country geo owners out there–and especially the premium .com owners–to get busy developing their domains, nothing else likely will.

Looking forward to you and your partners’ further expansion of the geo space.

And thanks for another great article, Ron; our industry, including the geo space; wouldn’t be where it is today without your great investigative reporting.

  11. Steve M Says:

p.s. Steve, best wishes and prayers for the best outcome possible to your family emergency.

  12. Tim Davids Says:

Now after meeting Skip at the geo expo, I am more excited as ever about this Geo space we’re in…whatta great guy and I just hope I have half his energy when I’m as old, er I mean as successful as he is :)

  13. marcia lynn Says:

    Another great piece, Ron!

Skip, let me know the next time you’re up this way; I’d enjoy talking with you — my treat for lunch or dinner.
