Austin’s Statesman Paper Up For Sale

Another major newspaper has been put up for sale.  Cox Enterprises announced this a few weeks ago. The Austin Statesman is the central texas newspaper of choice.  Cox is also selling 28 other daily and weekly newspapers in Texas, Colorado and North Carolina.

They have owned the Austin Statesman since 1976.  This is definitely another sign how poorly newspapers are continuing to perform.  Cox really has placed the paper for sale at bad time with the economy is struggling.  I doubt they will find a buyer anytime soon.

I have seen their website Statesman.com transform throughout the years into a mainstream site.  It is apparent that they are receiving a substantial amount of advertising revenue via the site.  However, no revenue figures were released for the Statesman newspaper.  More than likely, the figures are not impressive and this is the reason all these newspapers are being placed on the market.

Interesting times ahead as the internet continues to change the ways of traditional media. Geo domains continue to perform well with low overhead when compared to traditional media.
