GeoDomains, A New Frontier

It is amazing how our vision is transforming into reality since we first established SimplyGeo.com LLC in February 2008. Our vision has influenced the domain industry in ways no one would have imagined. There were a variety of topics in the domain industry when we first established the beginning of our network, good, bad and the ugly about the future of geodomains and their limitations. There were some, who additionally provided constructive criticism on our plans, but this did not discourage us from continuing our mission and goals. The facts were clear back then and even more so today as the internet continues to evolve.
The first stage of building our network was to acquire the brands that define the industry. We were very successful at this because we choose to move against the grain in the industry. It was not cheap, but it was definitely cheaper then, than if we tried to do the same thing now. At the time, the only business embracing geodomains was AssociatedCities.com and its members. A great group of professionals, who I really admire. We would later find out that there were thousands of individuals who had the same interest in geodomains.
Why Geodomains? Well, to be honest, it is the largest sector of the domain industry. Geodomains consist of a plethora of domains. You will find that alot of pioneers in the geodomain niche will refer to them as only cities, countries and states. However, it is much larger than this. GeoDomains consist of ccTLDS, geo+industry, city, state, country, neighborhoods, tourist destinations, IDNs, and the list goes on in all domain extensions. Soon to be added to the list are gTLDs which will be creative and contain geodomains. All of these are geographical domains that communicate a destination or region. It is the world we live in and what people search for on the internet in many cases.
Geodomains communicate exactly what you are looking for on the internet on a local level. Development of local platforms and services online have skyrocketed the past 2 years to keep up with the ongoing transformation. All of the major search engines have followed suit, delivering local content. As with any quality domain, geodomains deliver targeted visitors on a local level. I believe this is the reason they have continued to take center stage on the internet.
Additionally, you have government agencies and small businesses beginning to understand how geodomains can assist them with online success. This may later lead to more UDRP/WIPO decisions, but that is for another article.
The domain industry is undergoing transformation to embrace geodomains. 2009 was a big year for geodomains, despite the current recession in the United States, and many other countries. Our team stayed proactive in late 2008-2009. We held a variety of conference calls with senior management at many companies to discuss the value of geodomains and growth opportunities for their companies.
These are a few companies we influenced directly and who moved smartly to launch geodomain platforms. Additionally, BorrellAssociates.com entered the local trade conference arena.
-BuyDomains.com launches Local Domain Names.
-Godaddy.com launches GeoDomainMap.com also know as geo.godaddy.com.
-BorrellAssociates.com launches Local Online Advertising Conference
Recent announcement we had no direct involvement with, unfortunately!
Name.com launches Geo Domain Platform
We feel it is imperative for all marketplaces in the domain industry to deliver geodomain platforms, so customers can have the option of finding quality geodomains at their disposal. Our team will continue to talk to senior management at other marketplaces to show them how they can increase their revenue by launching geodomain platforms.
We hope to see Sedo.com become the next aftermarket to launch their geodomain platform.
This post is not intended to toot our own horn. It was written to define and educate readers how the industry is evolving to embrace geodomains. It’s amazing how they have been overlooked all these years. Better late than never! After all, geodomains are the new frontier IMO.
