GeoDomains And Market Trends, Big Money!

  Posts Posted by Steve under General on Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 10:55 pm

Sedo.com recently completed an overhaul of their website. It looks great, however, it was a bit weird navigating as I was accustomed to the old platform. Anyway, I came across some interesting statistics regarding average sales prices for domains. As you may know, Sedo.com is one of the largest domain auction platforms in the World.

The quarterly average sales price they produce has valuable information if you understand how to use it. Looking at the chart below, you can see geodomains have done outstanding each quarter, running competitively with dot com sales prices and crushing all other popular gTLDs.

Interesting enough, .fr, the France ccTLD, has out performed dot com for the past 3 quarters. As American domainers continue to state .com is king, the demand and sales numbers show geodomain ccTLDs are taking a run at the title.

I am one that believes .com is king, so I don’t want to get into that weathered topic. However, I am not foolish enough to ignore the data in the chart that clearly identifies the demand for geodomains globally. You have read it many times on this blog, and statistics continue to support the fact, that geodomains and everything local are the future of the internet. I hope to see a geodomain platform released by Sedo.com in the near future. It is clear based off the statistics above, it is time.

    The average sales price often doesn’t paint the true picture as very high sales bring up the average of several lower dollar sales which are more typical. SEDO also reports the median sales price in their quarterly reports.

    @leonard,

    You are absolutely correct. Does this mean that the average dot com sales is in reality are lower if high dollar sales were included? More than likely yes. However, would be interesting to see if they do include these high dollar sales when figuring this data. Perhaps they should have a different chart for sales $100k plus?

    Can someone from Sedo.com weigh in here and explain?

    Hello,
    I totally disagree with the stats of sedo.com
    Are brandable domain names and junk domain names in the llll.coms are included let us say ? How do you calculate the median?

    Are the one word domains (jets.com) and the two or three junk domains calculated and averaged in one criterion?

    What i suggest is to evaluate each domain in its sector and in its category and the market trend plays a role in this.

    Another thing: is there any other indicator included there? example: domains below $500 are not included in the stats.

    things we have to take in consideration!!

    what sedo.com is not more that a market trend and not enough to have it as a full indicator while buying.

    Nice ad disguised as an article.

  5. Steve Says:

    @Maui,

    No, it was not an ad. I felt it was useful information to publish.

    Thank you for your input.

  6. Open Domain Market Says:

    I keep on saying this for the last couple of months and happy the data supports my prediction. I have written the reason behind this in my blog.

    Simply saying .com is the God, ccTLD is the Devil.

    The known devil is better than unknown God.
    Future smart browsers will revert the type-in to ccTLD from where the search originates.
