Building GeoDomains and Their Values Interview

Posts Posted by Steve under General on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 11:10 pm

This is a topic that we have received several of questions about throughout the years. Now readers may be able to learn a few tips from this recent interview conducted with WebmasterRadio.fm today.

It took over a month to organize due to conflicting schedules between Skip and myself. Additionally, due to the holidays as well. However, Victor Pitts ended our procrastination today and the interview was executed with Skip in Panama and myself in North Carolina. Victor did an outstanding job moderating the interview as he does all of them, and is a true professional.

This is the first live interview we have conducted as a team since forming SimplyGeo.com LLC. The industry has come a long way since the specialized  blog was established and it has been both rewarding and difficult at times. However, as the popular saying by Mr. T. says, “No Pain, No Gain”.

We hope you enjoy the interview and look forward to many more years of networking and success. Our goal has always been about promoting the geo domain space and helping others become successful in it.

I am almost certain there is much more pain to come, before we start to gain. LOL.

Have a good day and thank you for all the support throughout the years.

one of the most interesting shows I have listened to in a long time. when Skip says we don’t even know how big the impact of these geos will be it gets you pretty excited! domainers need to make the shift to become media companies it seems.

terrible to hear your tax pessimism Steve, but you are probably right, however, I should think there will be some hefty lobbyists in our corner.

I just listened to it as well, excellent job

@crowdmanage – you right thats why I’m shifting towards geo’s, just launched Palermo.com and also concentrating on local city directory domains.
cant wait till end of april…that would be my first geo conference..hope to see you there

    Steve

Awesome radio show guys. I’m an avid listener of Domain Masters on webmasterradio.fm.

Since I own around 500 geo and geo service domains, i found your show to have been the best in a very long time.

I seen the potential value in Geo Service domains about 18 months ago and decided to invest in as many as possible.

Gurus have predicted 2010 to be the year of mobile internet browsing. With the advent of the iphone and now many other copy cat phones, people are rapidly turning to browsing the internet on their mobiles. Apparently for every person that joins an ISP using a PC, 4 people join via mobile. So within 2 or 3 years, there will be more people surfing the web via mobile phone than PC.

I think the Yellow Pages print directory will be obsolete in 3 or 4 years due to the ease of mobile browsing. I conducted a survey of 100 people in Oct, 2008, asking them, “Online Search vs Yellow Pages”, what service do you prefer when searching for local businesses? 80% voted online search, while only 17% chose the Yellow Pages, 3% was for “Other service” option. (you can see my survey results at http://southaussies.com).

The Yellow Pages was struggling against PC web search but was still surviving due to the convenience factor of searching the book and turning on your PC and connecting to the net taking the same amount of time. Yellow Pages doesn’t stand a chance against the convenience of mobile browsing.

Local businesses wont be seeing the ROI they are looking for from the Yellow Pages. This means they will most likely turn to marketing their business online. If you are lucky enough to own a few local service domain names, you can develop your domains and become the authority in that niche. A full page Yellow Ad cost $40,000 a year in my city. You could charge the businesses 1/10 that and still be sitting on a gold mine.

Its definitely an exciting time for geo and geo service domain name owners.

    Just 2 quick questions Steve,
Do you know of any good CMS’s or domain management software that allow you to develop and edit mass domain from the one dashboard rather than developing the domains individually?
I love using wordpress so a mass wordpress blog manager would be the ultimate time saver.

Geo service domains are difficult to choose, because im torn between the 2 main variations that they come in, e.g. limohireatlanta.com or atlantalimohire.com. From my tracking and analysis the service is typed in before the geo location (Limo Hire Atlanta) 5 times more often than Geo first (Atlanta Limo Hire). Since Google gives domains a large ranking bonus if they are an exact match with the keyphrase searched. Wouldnt it be better to take advantage of this bonus and purchase limohireatlanta.com since a lot less SEO has to be done to get the website ranking high for the higher volume search term. Or do you think its better to go for the better sounding atlantalimohire.com still?

  6. @crowdmanage Says:

aaron – wordpress MU (multi user) sounds like it will meet your needs. Barry likes it: http://www.predictivedomaining.com/category/wordpress-mu/

  7. Aaron Says:

@crowdmanage – Thanks a million for that resource mate. Wordpress MU was the first thing I looked into a while back but I read that it was for managing multiple subdomain blogs but not multiple TLD’s. Now that iv found that you can with a little bit of manipulation its saved the day.

Its also awesome news that wordpress mu and wordpress are merging so you can manage all domains from the one place while each domain has its own database allowing you to be able to seperate a domain from your portfolio and sell it without much hassle. The rumor is that wordress 3.0 will have the merger. Fingers crossed it happens soon.

  8. M. Menius Says:

Much appreciated Steve and Skip for taking your time to talk about geo domains and geo development.

  9. @crowdmanage Says:

No worries Aaron. Like your site. It should read “Some web analystS predict”

if you aren’t reading bruce marler yet then i am sure you will find his thoughts on local search interesting

    cheers
