Scott Roberts, Winner Of The GeoDomainer.com Contest

Posts Posted by Steve under Announcements, General on Monday, June 30th, 2008 7:19 am

Scott Roberts has won the GeoDomainer.com contest that concluded today. He won a $695 conference ticket to the GeoDomain Expo in Chicago 10-12 July. There were many participants in this contest and I would like to thank each of them for their participation. Additionally, I hope to see all of you at the expo in 10 days.

This was not the standard contest you see held in the domain industry. In order to have a chance at winning the ticket, participants had to submit an essay on their goals in the domain industry and how they feel the AssociatedCities.com GeoDomain Expo would help them in accomplishing their goals. Even though only 1 person won the $695 ticket, I think several participants ended up winning by outlining their goals and now having a map to accomplish them.

Again, Congratulations Scott Roberts! GeoDomainer.com and team are happy to help others in attaining their goals. This is Scott’s winning essay.

Trading time for money. As a business model, it has limitations. I’m an IT consultant, so I can increase rates or add staff, but those are essentially the only options I have to grow my business. I’m not complaining; servers, workstations, switches and routers have been a great career for over ten years. But I want more. I want a business that will generate revenue without requiring someone’s physical presence. I want a business that can be leveraged into ever larger projects. I want a business that excites me again.

A little history is probably in order. I bought a few domain names as far back as 1997. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the massive potential of geographic and generic domains. Then around 2005 I became aware of the hidden industry known as domaining. I made up my mind to get into this business and began to read and learn. I started buying names I thought had potential. It took time for plans to come together, but on July 1, 2007 I started my own IT consulting business with flexibility as a primary goal. Now nearly a year later, I can devote two to three days a week to domaining and web development.

I’ve never wanted to rely on parking revenue, so my immediate goal is to develop and launch one website. It’s a modest but very achievable goal. I learn best by doing, so it’s important to get this first project completed. One operational site will create a kind of human inertia, paving the way for future goals.

Over the medium term I want to develop additional websites, while continuing to learn about the industry. For long?term success, I think it’s important to have a firm grasp of advertising sales, web analytics/testing and industry trends just to name a few topics. Ultimately my goal is to own a true media company, with a diversified portfolio of web properties.

The 2008 GeoDomain Expo can help me achieve these goals in several ways. By meeting and talking with industry veterans I can gain valuable insight about which domain to launch first. Making a wise choice at this stage will jump?start my development efforts. Also, from my background as an IT consultant I can attest to the value of knowing colleagues who can provide advice when needed. These connections can be priceless at times, and I enjoy the give and take of people helping people.

The speakers and sessions at the GeoDomain Expo look great for learning a tremendous amount about the industry, including details that may not be easily found online. I’m especially interested in the sessions on local advertising sales, technology and GeoDomains in the news. Beyond that, I’m sure I would learn answers to questions I didn’t even know enough to ask!

Finally, I think just being at the GeoDomain Expo would be a tremendous motivation to me. Meeting industry leaders, listening to speakers and watching a live domain auction would be the best way I can imagine to start a new career as a domain developer.

GeoDomainer.com Updates And Vacation Time

Posts Posted by Steve under Announcements on Saturday, June 14th, 2008 11:14 pm

This week was a very busy week for us.  I have not been able to post on the blog lately, as we have been busy with big meetings and updating the GeoDomainer.com backend, and other site developments.  It is all time consuming! Overall, it was a very productive week for us.

I also want to keep everyone informed that I will be going on vacation tomorrow for a week or so.  I will not be blogging much as the family has told me, “It’s family time”.  With that being said, you all know that I can not argue with the First Lady of the house.

The GeoDomainer.com contest is going great! We encourage everyone who wants a chance at winning a free ticket to the Expo to participate.  It will be a lot of fun and very rewarding for those who participate.

The GeoDomain Expo Agenda has been updated.  Please make sure to check it out. You can visit GeoExpo.com to see the updated info.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone continued success in their endeavors.  Stay focused and embrace your passions.  2008 is going to be a great year. I know I was all over in this post, but I wanted to hit on the key topics.

Thank you for your continued support.

Win A Ticket To The Associated Cities GeoDomain Expo, Join The GeoDomainer.com Contest Today!

Posts Posted by Steve under Announcements on Thursday, June 12th, 2008 11:56 pm

We have decided to hold a contest to win a ticket to attend the GeoDomain Expo in Chicago from the 10th-12th of July. This is a $695 value we purchased to give readers of the blog an opportunity to attend the GeoDomain Expo hosted by AssociatedCities.com and the Kelsey Group. There have been quite a few conferences the last 6 months in the domain industry, however, none of them are as unique as the GeoDomain Expo. If you want to advance your education on domain development and want to change things up a bit from past conferences, this is the show to attend. There will be a myriad of professionals from the Media world and of course many professional domainers present. A perfect place to network!

Participants who are interested in joining this contest must be a member of GeoDomainer.com. Once a member, participants can join the GeoDomainer Contest Group to get the contest guidelines. A winner will be announced on 30 June to give the winner time to make travel and hotel arrangements.

Of course, contest participants will have to do a simple task for the chance to win. What is it? You will have to join the group on Geodomainer.com to find out. This contest is open to all domainers!

GeoDomaining.com Will Launch As Development Blog Feed Portal

Posts Posted by Steve under Announcements on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 12:14 pm

We will soon start working on developing GeoDomaining.com into a website development blog feed portal.   Included in the site will be feeds from many of the popular Development, Search Engine, Site Revenue Strategy, and SEO blogs.  This will prove to be a very valuable resource for those embracing development.

The future for many domainers is development.  This will be a neat resource where you can learn from many experts, as well as novices that are learning as they go.  As we all know, development can take your domain to the next level of success.  Of course, this all depends on your game plan.  A small goal of ours, will be to bridge the gap as much as possible that exists between developers/SEOers and domainers.  I think a platform like this can make progress with this divided line.

We have no doubt that GeoDomaining.com will become popular for all domainers interested in development.  There will be no need to visit separate development sites anymore.  Soon, all the major sites will be colocated on GeoDomaining.com.

As a disclaimer, this will not compete with Domaining.com’s current platform.  I have talked to Francois and shared this game plan with him.  This is a needed resource in the domain industry that is not currently being provided. We had this idea when we first started negotiating GeoDomaining.com 3 months ago.  Geodomaining.com has been branded in the geo domain industry long before us as a part of development, as well as monetizing websites, selling geo domains and developed  websites, etc.  We will continue to support all that Domaining.com does on our complete network as I told Francois.  The industry needs as many educational resources available for domainers and investors.  As I have stated many times, we want to provide the tools and services to assist in making you successful with your domains.  For the record, we will not list domain industry blogs, and will only list the ones I stated above.  Good stuff to come.

Thank you for your continued support!

The Geo Network Is Growing

Posts Posted by Steve under Announcements on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 11:19 am

The Geo Network is starting to take some shape and users have started to embrace the platforms launched thus far.  GeoDomainer.com has done outstanding in 1 months time.  Already, it has recruited 156 members and growing daily.  Many are top industry professionals in the domain industry.  Our modest goal is to reach 1,000 members by the end of the year.  In order to do this, we will continue to add applications that are useful to industry professionals.  Additionally, members can assist by inviting friends, associates, etc to GeoDomainer.com.  We have added some upgrades to the site this week, with many more planned in the near future.  If you have not signed up, please do so and see what the site has to offer.

The Geo Forum has continued to grow as well. There is lots of great information located on this site from an array of professionals.  It is also a great place to sell geo domains and network.

SimplyGeo.com continues to grow each month with quality readership.  We have decided that we will keep the blog going as a general blog and make the blog on GeoDomains.com our corporate blog.  If you are interested in advertising, now is the time to sign up.  We offer great pricing for the quality of eyeballs we get monthly on SimplyGeo.com.  Prices will soon go up to meet industry standards.  There are a variety of plans to choose from where you can lock in rates for 3 months.

There is still lots of work to do.  We are working some amazing deals in the back ground.  They will be good for the domain industry as a whole and will bring value to all industry professionals that embrace them.  Development is hard work, but it is also very rewarding to see sites grow and people using them daily.  Geodomainer.com and the Geo Forum will continue to grow without any interaction from our part.  It is great to develop platforms where user-generated content keeps the sites growing.  I stated this as a goal when I first started blogging.  It is now starting to take shape and is very fulfilling.  There are many great things to come.

Thank you for your continued support!
